Autopsy of dead infant left in Portland inconclusive, police say; parents still not found

An autopsy of the dead baby found in Portland’s Kenton neighborhood on July 26 was “inconclusive” in determining the infant’s cause of death, officials said.

The infant was found outside in a residential area near North Fenwick Avenue and Argyle Street, police said.

The parents have not been located, Portland Police Bureau spokesperson Mike Benner said in an email on Tuesday.

The Multnomah County medical examiner has yet to do bloodwork on the deceased infant, and Benner said it could be months before a final report on the baby’s death is completed.

Oregon has a Safe Haven Law that permits parents to leave an infant under 60 days of age at a medical facility, police station or fire station without identifying themselves, Benner pointed out. As long as the infant doesn’t show any signs of abuse or neglect and is handed directly to an authorized staff person, the parents will not be criminally liable.

Portland police ask anyone with information about this case to contact Det. Katie Manus at katie.manus@police.portlandoregon.gov.
