Baseball: Former Bearcat Guerrero named Texas League Pitcher of the Week

Posted

W.F. West alum Tyson Guerrero was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week by Minor League Baseball on Monday, earning the honor for his performance in two starts against the Wichita Wind Surge last week.

Guerrero earned a win in one start and was given a no decision in another, allowing just three hits in 13 shutout innings of work. He tallied 11 strikeouts and walked just three.

Guerrero, a 12th round pick in 2021, has spent the entire 2024 season with the Northwest Arkansas Travelers, the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Last week’s starts were No. 16 and 17, and they helped lower his season ERA to 4.30.

It’s the first time Guerrero has earned the honor this season, though he did earn league honors with High-A Quad Cities last April.

Including three appearances last August, Guerrero’s career ERA at Double-A now sits at 4.56, and he’s tallied 109 strikeouts in 94.2 innings.

Hawkins records scoreless inning in second Double-A appearance

Fellow former Bearcat Dakota Hawkins, who recently earned a promotion to Double-A, threw a scoreless inning in his second outing with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the New York Mets affiliate, on Sunday.

Hawkins struck out a pair in a perfect inning, needing just 12 pitches to retire the side in order.

It was a solid bounceback for Hawkins, who gave up four hits and four earned runs in three innings in his debut five days prior.

Prior to earning the call up, Hawkins appeared in 21 games, including eight starts, with the Brooklyn Cyclones. There, he posted an ERA of 4.34 and struck out 61 batters in 66.1 innings.

Hawkins signed with the Mets as an undrafted free agent last July, and he is now just two big steps away from the big leagues.
