Bearcat Boys and Girls Wrestlers Win on the Road in Aberdeen

Beating Aberdeen on the road in its last dual of the season, the W.F. West boys wrestling team clinched its 10th-straight league championship Thursday night, 57-11. 

The Bearcats won 12 of their 14 matches wrestled, and will begin postseason play at the 2A Evergreen Conference championships next Saturday at Black Hills. 

Kyle Nowles (182 pounds), Waylen Land (195), Andrew Penland (220), Daniel Matagi (285), Blake Ely (145) and Hayden Sciera (160) all won via pin. 

Damian Hernandez (120) won via technical fall and Cristo Parriott won in a 14-3 major decision. 



Race Scaici (126) , Grayson Serl (132), Joseph Acuna (152) and Tucker Land (170) all added for W.F. West.

“We want to make sure we’re taking care of that and that strong tradition,” Bearcats coach Jamie Rakevich said of the league title. “Hopefully we’ll be ready for postseason, it really comes down to that last weekend. It starts to get real now in the next couple of weeks.”

The girls, meanwhile, picked up a dominant win against a regional powerhouse, winning nine of 12 matches on the night. 

Winners for the Bearcats included Berkeley Varick, Kylee Breen, Emily Mallonee, Eden Hornby, Kaylee Lehman, Courtney Jones, Lia Hornby, Aurora Martin, and Kallee Corey.
