Bearcats Get Into Win Column in Longview

The W.F. West girls soccer team fell behind early, came back quickly, and held on in the second half to beat Mark Morris 4-3 for its first win of the season.

After the Monarchs went up 1-0 in the seventh minute, the W.F. West offense – which hadn’t scored a goal from open play in its first two matches – kicked into gear. Cameron Sheets set up Lena Fragner, who made it 1-1, in the 12th minute, and seven minutes after that, Maddie Shields gave the Bearcats the lead off an assist from Wyatt Rogerson.

“Cameron had an amazing game dominating the midfield and created several opportunities with her distribution,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “Our forwards and wingers were moving off the ball well today and giving her some great options."

The one-goal lead lasted through halftime, before Sheets tok over in the second half. In the 53rd minute, the senior gave the Bearcats some insurance with an unassisted goal. After Mark Morris drew a goal back in the 68th, W.F. West had to hold on for 10 minutes before winning a penalty, which Sheets converted on the cusp of stoppage time to make it 4-2.

That goal turned out to be huge, as the Monarchs struck right back with a free-kick goal in stoppage time, but it would be too little, too late.

W.F. West put 10 shots on frame, compared to nine from Mark Morris. Anderson pointed to Zoey Robertson and Hannah Meier as leading the defensive effort, but said things didn’t stop with the starting 11.

“We got great minutes from our bench,” he said. “There was no let-down today.”

W.F. West (1-2-0) will get into 2A EvCo play Tuesday at Shelton.
