Taking the show on the road Friday afternoon in a battle atop of the 2A Evergreen Conference standings, the W.F. West softball team dispatched Aberdeen on the road to take sole possession of first in league with a 6-3 win.
The Bearcats showcased a disciplined approach at the plate, drawing eight walks against Bobcat ace Lilly Camp, and striking out just five teams with eight hits smattered over seven innings.
W.F. West never managed more than two runs in an inning, but scored in all but two innings in the win.
“She throws really hard,” W.F. West coach Kevin Zylstra said of Camp. “And we struck out a few times but for the most part we hit it pretty hard. She’s a super competitor, it's hard to get a win against her. I was really happy.
“We played add-on, one here and one there and just kept the pressure on them all game long.”
Brielle Etter had another strong day in the field after catching popouts with ease against Rochester earlier in the week, making some strong plays to anchor another good infield performance for the Bearcats. Etter also nearly went yard, hitting the centerfield fence on a double on a 2 for 3 day with a run scored, two RBIs, and two walks.
“Etter had a heck of a game at second base,” Zylstra said. “She put on a display of leatherwork and made some beautiful plays. She’s rock-steady, our infield looked really good. We’re used to playing on turf, so playing on dirt can be an adventure but the girls looked really good for the most part.”
Avalon Myers added a 2 for 4 line with a run scored, an RBI, and drew a walk with a double, and Staysha Fluetsch had a 2-RBI base knock with a walk drawn.
Ella Young again got the start in the circle and threw another complete game with three runs allowed — none earned — on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
W.F. West is scheduled to play Shelton in Chehalis on Monday at 4:30 p.m. for its next game.
