Bearcats Pull Away From Shelton in 2nd Half

The W.F. West boys soccer team needed a bit of time to find its groove in its first game in nearly two weeks, but hit its stride after halftime to beat Shelton 5-1 on the road.

“The guys played really well coming off of a long break,” WFW coach Allen Anderson said.

It took the better part of a half for the Bearcats to get onto the scoreboard, with Cody Pennington striking on an assist from Adrian Jaimes in the 37th minute.

That gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead heading into the break, and while Shelton got the goal back in the 47th minute, the newfound tie would be brief.

In the 49th minute, Pennington set up Damian Hernandez, who made it 2-1. In the 64th, Jaimes gave WFW some insurance with an assist from Israel Lopez Cruz, and two minutes later, Lopez Cruz fed Elvis Leal Perez for a goal to make it 4-1.

Leal Perez got his brace just before the game could wrap, scoring his second goal in the 78th minute, with the assist going to Ethan Klovdahl.

W.F. West is set to return home to host Aberdeen on Friday.
