The W.F. West girls basketball team put its best foot forward right away in Cowlitz County on Monday, downing Kelso 67-20 behind a blowout of a first quarter.

The Bearcats (8-0, 3-0 2A EvCo) scored the game’s first 22 points, and led 26-3 after a quarter of play.

“We started pretty hot,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofksi said. “We were sharing the ball and defensively we were pretty good.”

The Bearcats didn’t exactly let up defensively after that, holding their hosts to just 17 point in the final 24 minutes.

“We were just active,” Karnofski said. “I thought we communicated well. I thought we did a good job of getting deflections, too.”

Julia Dalan put in 27 points to outscore Kelso by herself and lead the charge offensively for W.F. West. A couple freshmen got in on the scoring for the Bearcats, too, with Dilyn Boeck dropping 12 points and Joy Cushman adding eight.

W.F. West will head east next for one of the most high-profile non-league matchups in the state this winter in the form of a matchup with two-time defending state champion Ellensburg, at Central Washington University on Thursday.

“They’re good,” Karnofski said. “It’s going to be a fun matchup; we’re excited for it.”
