Bearcats speed past Aberdeen

Coming off its longest ride of the league season, the W.F. West football team jumped off the bus in Aberdeen and got out to its best start of the season Friday, rolling to a 41-14 win over the Bobcats to put itself in prime position for second place in the 2A EvCo.

The Bearcats (5-3, 4-1 2A EvCo) hit double digits in the first quarter for the first time this season, thanks to a short touchdown run by quarterback Gage Brumfield and a 14-yard touchdown pass from Brumfield to Grady Westlund. From there, W.F. West kept rolling, racing out to a 28-7 lead at halftime.

“We had a few big plays through the air, putting the ball where it needed to be, and guys making the catches that needed to be made,” WFW coach Dan Hill said.

A whole host of Bearcats were making those catches. Westlund led the group with 92 yards on four receptions — adding a 49-yard score in the final minute of the first half — while Connor Coleman logged a team-best five catches for 76 yards. Tucker Land and Carson White both hauled in three receptions, and both found the end zone once.

Brumfield finished his night 17 for 26 for 292 yards and four touchdowns.

“I thought Gage and the receivers had overall their best game tonight,” Hill said.

Miles Martin found the end zone in the third quarter to cap off the scoring and cap off a solid performance on the ground where he, Brumfield, Land and Declan McDonald combined to post most of the Bearcats’ 161 yards.

W.F. West outgained its hosts 453-212 on the night.

The win sends the Bearcats into Swamp Cup week on a three-game winning streak. If W.F. West can stretch its run of success over rival Centralia to 15 years, the Bearcats will clinch second in the EvCo, and earn the right to host a crossover matchup.

“I think we’re playing some good football, the best football we have yet,” Hill said. “Just getting better every day. There’s lots of excitement about where we;’re going and the direction of the team, and the boys know we’re not done yet.”
