Bearcats Take 2 From Highclimbers

The W.F. West baseball team rode another dominant outing from Hunter Lutman to breeze to a 10-0 win over Shelton to open its 2A EvCo doubleheader on the road, before getting a bit more nervy in a 9-8 win over the Highclimbers to cap the day.

Lutman tossed a six-inning shutout to lead the way in Game 1, lowering his ERA on the season to 2.55. He struck out 12 and gave up just a pair of hits and four walks.

At the plate, the Bearcats continued their theme of fast starts, putting up two runs right off the bat in the first inning, scoring again in the second, and adding three more in the third. From there, the bats went quiet, but they woke up for a four-run sixth that got the game into run-rule territory.

The offense continued into Game 2, with W.F. West — designated as the home team this time — pushing runs across in five of its six frames at the plate. Ross Kelley put together a pair of two-hit games to finish with four knocks on the day to lead the way, and Gavin Fugate drove in four runs.

The Highclimbers got some scoring of their own to make things interesting in Game 2, plating five runs in the top of the sixth to briefly take an 8-7 lead, but Fugate tied things up on a sacrifice fly, and Kelley hit a go-ahead double. Freshman Miles Martin came in to pick of the save, taking advantage of a successful appeal when a Highclimber missed first base, and the Bearcats survived with their perfect league record still intact.

W.F. West is slated to face Centralia on the road Friday.
