The W.F. West girls soccer team improved to 2-0 on Thursday, as the Bearcats topped Elma 4-1 on their home field.

“It was a really good win for us,” W.F. West coach Kevin Schultz said. “The kind of game you want for a non-league game.”

Ashlen Gruginski scored both of W.F. West’s goals in the first half, connecting on an assist from Kallie Hitch in the 10th minute before taking it herself in the 31st.

Emily Mallonee scored just eight minutes into the second half to make it 3-0, and Daisy Medel scored the Bearcats’ fourth in the 75th minute off an assist from Jaelynn Fuentes.

“It was a really good win for us,” Schultz said. “The word today was selfless, and I thought they played selflessly. That was great.

“We’re focused on growing, and as a team we played well,” Schultz continued. “I feel like we’ve improved since Tuesday.”

The Eagles got on the board in the second half, but overall, Schultz was very pleased with the team’s defensive performance. He specifically commended Elizabeth Mittge, who he said commanded the middle of the field shutting down any Elma counter-attacks.

The Bearcats will take on Archbishop Murphy at the Montesano Soccer Showcase on Saturday.
