Big second half leads Pirates to win over Bulldogs

The Adna football team improved to 2-3 on the season with a 53-32 win over Stevenson on Friday.

It was a back-and-forth affair early, as the two teams traded touchdown drives.

In the third quarter, the Pirates took the lead and began to pull away, as the Pirate defense clamped down. Jens Neilson came away with an interception, while Gavan Muller and Anthony Sturdivant got after the quarterback with multiple sacks each.

Offensively, led by Lane Johnson, the Pirates continued to score almost at will. Adna head coach Aaron Cochrane has been impressed with the way Johnson has developed over the course of the season.

“He’s just an effective quarterback and he’s developing a toughness I’m really excited about,” Cochrane said. “Just excited about him developing and continuing to compete.”

He was also pleased with the team’s overall resolve, noting that Friday’s game could have gone either way, but the Pirates pulled through.

“Instead of folding, our kids battled,” Cochrane said. “They got after it in the third quarter and dominated … the kids just made plays as the game went along.”

As a team, the Pirates ran for 359 yards and six touchdowns. Elijah Jimenez got a bulk of the carries on the ground, going for 163 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

Lane Johnson added 105 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries, while Luke Mohney ran for 53 yards and a score on just six carries.

The Pirates weren't as explosive through the air, but Mohney did add 55 yards on six catches and Gavan Muller scored on a 30-yard passing touchdown from Johnson.

Mohney and Muller also made their presence felt defensively, as Mohney forced a fumble and had 12 tackles, while Muller recovered a fumble and had two sacks.

Anthony Sturdivant also got after the quarterback, notching three sacks and a forced fumble. Steven O'Dell also got to the quarterback twice.

It’s only league games here on out for the Pirates, starting with a trip to Toledo next week.
