The Centralia College women’s basketball team beat Spokane 71-55 on Sunday, salvaging a split at the weekend’s Blazer Classic after losing 80-66 to Umpqua on Saturday.

“Our athletes executed their offense and started to make things happen when plays break down,” first-year CC coach Tiffany Twiddy. “Us recognizing where our teammates are on the court and finding them is a huge celebration.”

Freshman Madison Gore came a rebound shy of a double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds to lead the team, and also came away with five steals. Maya Barnett had 18 points, six assists and three steals of her own. Foai Pula and Kate Carpenter also did a bit of everything with Pula racking up nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals and Carpenter coming away with seven points, eight boards and five blocks.

CC led just about from tip-off to final buzzer, keeping the lead around 10 points for most of the second half before stretching it as far as 18 in the fourth quarter.

The Sunday win went a whole lot better than the Blazers’ Saturday against undefeated Umpqua, when the Riverhawks pulled away in the middle two quarters after holding CC to just seven points in the third.

Gore led the Blazers with 24 points and Pula added 20 to go along with eight rebounds, but the rest of the lineup combined for just 22 all together.

CC will get a few days off before returning to action against Skagit Valley on Friday for their first of three games at the Treasure Valley Crossover.
