Riverhawks Eek Out Win Over Wolverines
Playing its second game in the San Juan Islands, the Toledo boys basketball team got a win on the road, defeating Friday Harbor, 56-53, Saturday afternoon.
The Riverhawks were led by the scoring efforts of Kaven Winters and Conner Olmstead, who co-led the team in points with 15 a piece. Rogan Stanley also added nine for Toledo.
Christian Malunat also grabbed nine boards in the win.
Toledo takes on Adna next on the road Tuesday.
Beavers Defeat Kodiaks on the Road
With opponents already busting out all the stops to contain sophomore Tenino boys basketball guard Noah Schow, other Beavers thrived in a 65-40 win over Columbia Adventist Saturday night.
The Kodiaks threw a box-and-one defense at Schow, something his sister, Ashley — currently starting for Central Washington University this winter — faced when she starred for the Beavers a year ago.
Schow managed 12 points against the defense, but let others feast, with Austin Gonia scoring 20 points and hauling in 13 boards and Preston Snider adding 11 points. Jack Burkhardt also added 10 points with seven rebounds.
Schow, for his part, also had a double-double with those 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
The Beavers play next against Aberdeen next weekend.
Cardinals Grab First Win Against Pe Ell
Trailing by five heading into the fourth quarter of a defensive slugfest, the Winlock boys basketball team used a 15-3 fourth quarter run to defeat Pe Ell Saturday, 38-31.
The Cardinals were led by the double-digit scoring efforts of Chase Scofield and Landon Cline, who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
“Defensively I was really proud of our effort all night long,” Cardinals coach Cole Doughty said. “When shots weren’t falling in the first half we didn’t let that affect us and our guys battled back and made up for it on the defensive end.”
The Trojans were led by Kail Homan’s 10 points, and Calan McCarty added six for Pe Ell in the loss.
Winlock takes on Rainier next on Tuesday while the Trojans look to respond against Three Rivers Christian on the road Tuesday.
Timberwolves Fall on Second Road Trip to Cougars
For the second straight time to start the season the Morton-White Pass boys basketball team traveled, but this time couldn’t get a win against Seton Catholic, 55-48, Saturday afternoon.
The Timberwolves were ahead at the half, but a tough, 22-12 third quarter that didn’t go their way ended up spelling their doom.
“Seton Catholic shot the heck out of the ball,” T-Wolves coach Chad Cramer said. “We tried a few different defenses and coverages and they still hit shots. They’re a good team and that’s why we wanted to play them, we knew it would be a battle coming to their place and it was exactly that.”
Hunter Hazen again led MWP in scoring with 26 points, and Josh Salguero added 14 points of his own in the loss.
The Timberwolves will hope to rebound against league foe Toutle Lake on Tuesday.
Ony Picks Up First Win Against South Bend
After starting slow in the first half, the Onalaska boys basketball team fought back to beat South Bend in its home opener, 60-49, giving new coach Brent Wood his first win as Ony’s coach.
Rylan McGraw led the Loggers with 15 points, and CJ Davis and Nick Rushton weren’t far behind with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
“I'm proud of the boys for showing some fight when we got down,” Wood said. “I haven't seen that from them before. I want to commend Case McGraw and CJ Davis for taking on the tall task of guarding (Ty) Reidinger, limiting him to seven points in the second half. (Sam) Pannkuk and Davis gave us some huge minutes off the bench. Blaze (Underhill) and Nick had another strong performance handling their full court pressure, and our big guy Rylan was a beast down low.”
The Loggers take on Wahkiakum on Tuesday at home against a league foe.
Acorns Win Second Straight Over Pope John Paul II
Every Oakville boys basketball player scored in an 86-50 win over Pope John Paul II Saturday night at home in non-league action.
Eddie Klatush led the way for the Acorns, going for 28 points, with Courtney Price adding 15, Daniel Rodas adding 14, and Haezen Cayenne chipping in another 10.
The Acorns take on Centralia on the road Monday for more non-league action.
