Cardinals Take Out Eagles in Non-Leaguer

The Winlock boys basketball team dropped a big first quarter and rode out to a 58-51 win over Pope John Paul II in non-league play on Wednesday.

Payton Sickles logged a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the Cardinals, scoring 15 of those points in the first quarter, which Winlock won 22-11. By the second quarter, though, the offense slowed down, and the Eagles clawed back into the game to narrow the gap to three points by the end of the third.

Lincoln Ruiz helped Winlock seal the deal in the fourth quarter, finishing with a double-double of his own with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

“Offensively our emphasis was to take care of the ball, and we did a much better job of that tonight,” Winlock coach Cole Doughty said. “Defensively again our effort was there all night, we just need to finish with rebounds.”

PJPII senior Anthony Dizon kept the Eagles in it with 30 points by himself, and Logan Johnson scored 18, but the Cardinals held the rest of the visiting lineup to just three points.

Winlock (2-1) will get back to Central 2B League play Saturday at Napavine.
