Centralia City Council Amends Biennial Budget, Increasing It by $1.8 Million

The Centralia City Council voted unanimously to amend the city’s 2023-2024 budget by $1,852,673 during its Tuesday night meeting following a proposal by City Finance Director Bret Broderson. It was the amendment’s first of two readings.

Since the budget’s adoption last November, city staff have identified additional budget revenue, while the city has also been handed some unanticipated new expenses, including the police department’s new Flock Safety Camera System, a damaged lawn mower that needed replacement and postal machine lease fee increases, among others.

The largest new expense was the city’s recent purchase of the old Umpqua Bank building located on 215 N. Pearl St. for $1,230,000.

Previously, Centralia’s biennial budget totalled $147,711,148. Amended, it now totals $149,563,821.

The budget amendment proposal should receive its second reading at the next Centralia City Council meeting. For more information on Centralia’s budget, visit https://www.cityofcentralia.com/201/Budget.
