Centralia Public Works Announces Winter Snow Plow Plans

With winter about to descend on the region, the City of Centralia’s Public Works Department announced its snow plow strategy in a news release on Tuesday.

The street department has a total of five snowplows and three sanders all mounted on dump trucks and pickup trucks. The city’s motor grader is converted to plow snow as well.

Once winter storms begin to hit, the city’s strategy will be to give sanding and plowing priority to bridges, viaducts, major hillside roads, signaled intersections and roads leading to the hospital. According to the release, Centralia has a total of 82 miles of roadway. Once priority streets have been cleared and sanded, sanding and plowing on other roads in the city will be carried out as long as drivers and equipment are available.

Street restrictions and closures may occur should conditions be extreme.

“Do not drive if you do not have to. If you have to go out please slow down, give the snow plows and sanders plenty of room to operate,” the city stated in the release.

Public Works also warned drivers to give distance to sanders to avoid having their vehicles get hit with rocks. Snow plows also need extra space as the trucks make wide turns. Keep your distance and ensure the operator sees you, the city advises.

“The city’s street department will make every effort to keep the roads passable and with patience, the citizens of Centralia will be able to travel safely throughout the city,” the city stated.
