Centralia’s Federal Communications Commission-licensed amateur radio emergency services team, which provides backup communications during emergency situations, will participate in Amateur Radio Field Day from 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, to 11 a.m. Sunday, June 23.
The field day is sponsored by Amateur Radio Relay League, which is the national association for amateur radio in the U.S.
The event is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the United States and Canada. The league represents over 170,000 Federal Communications Commission-licensed amateurs.
During field day, thousands of amateur radio operators gather with their groups, clubs and friends to operate in remote locations. According to the Amateur Radio Relay League’s website, field day is all about amateur radio’s science, skill and service to local and national communities. The event combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skill.
Centralia’s amateur radio team regularly volunteers their time, expertise and equipment to provide backup communications during emergency situations. Volunteers train to conduct urban and rural searches for lost or missing persons, as well as provide communications during community events such as parades and summer festivals.
