Centralia’s Wasson Finishes Second at 2A State Golf Championships

Finishing the day with some late dramatics, Centralia’s Von Wasson hit some tough shots on the back-nine to climb back into title contention after a tough start, and finished tied for second at the 2A State Golf Championships at Liberty Lake Wednesday afternoon.

The junior was down three strokes to leader Ben Wilson of Burlington-Edison on the final hole, but with his back against the wall birdied — while Wilson double bogeyed — to tie with Wilson when all was said and done, with both players’ two-day scores finishing at 142.

Both shot a 69 on Day 1 Tuesday, before finishing Day 2 with a 73.

Lynden’s Logan Medcalf, in the second to last group, carded a 70 on Day 1 and a 71 on Day 2 to take the title, one stroke ahead of Wasson and Wilson to win outright.

The tournament finish marks Wasson’s second-straight top-5 finish at the state tournament after finishing fourth a year ago.

The junior also won league and district championships during the fall season.

Black Hills’ Luke Fenner finished just behind his Day 1 pace, carding an 80 on Day 2 to finish with a two-day score of 156, good for 22nd.

Tumwater’s Braeden Konrad eked into Day 2 contention after carding an 82 on Tuesday, which was the cut off for the two-day tournament. Konrad shot a 91 on the second day, to finish with a two-day, 36-hole score of 173.
