Chehalis Foundation, school district break ground on Bearcat Stadium renovation project

Bearcat Stadium was far from ready to host a ballgame Monday afternoon, but now that the Chehalis Foundation and the Chehalis School District have broken ground on a project to completely renovate the field with new turf, the vision of baseball games at a state-of-the-art stadium at W.F. West is one step closer to reality.

“I can’t wait until we can say ‘let’s play ball,” Chehalis Superintendent Dr. Christine Moloney said during a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, Aug. 28.

The upgraded baseball field will feature advanced drainage systems, professional-grade turf and optimal conditions for players and spectators, according to the Chehalis Foundation. Phase two of the project could include the installation of energy-efficient lighting, allowing for extended playing hours.

“Together, we will create a ballfield that will become a symbol of unity, sportsmanship and community pride. Today, we break ground, but tomorrow, we shape the future,” Chehalis Foundation Executive Director Jenny Collins said Monday, thanking the foundation's past and present donors.

“Your generosity will not only provide a safe and well-equipped space for our athletes, but it will also provide opportunities for growth, friendship and a sense of belonging for all who step foot onto this field,” she said.

Also thanking those who donated to the baseball stadium project, Moloney said, “Chehalis students, present and future, have really hit a home run by being part of the Chehalis community that has such a passion for baseball and the ability to donate time, money and resources to create an incredible experience for students athletes, our families and our community through a brand new baseball stadium complex.”

The Chehalis Foundation and the Chehalis School District first announced their partnership for the baseball stadium project in April 2022.
