Twentieth Legislative District state Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, welcomed a group of students from the Chehalis School District’s VISIONS program to the state Capitol last week, explaining some of the workings of government.

The VISIONS program caters to students ages 18 to 21 with disabilities, aiming to equip them with the necessary skills for higher education, employment and independent living. Participants in the program are guided toward developing essential workplace competencies and fostering positive attitudes.

During their visit, the students interacted with Abbarno, who emphasized the significance of programs such as VISIONS in nurturing inclusive communities.

"The VISIONS program is essential to students and families in Chehalis and beyond," Abbarno said. "Empowering students with disabilities with life skills and fostering independence are pivotal to their success."

In a news release announcing the visit, Abbarno's office said that he has been a vocal advocate for increased housing investments for individuals with disabilities, has consistently supported full funding for special education, and has actively collaborated with local disability advocacy groups to promote inclusion initiatives.

"I am honored to have spent time with the students and staff as they toured our state Capitol and learned about how government works for all of us," Abbarno said.
