Travelers on U.S. Highway 12 near the Mossyrock Dam should expect delays through mid-September, a news release from the Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) warned.
On Monday, Aug. 3, WSDOT contractor Granite Construction began setting up the work zone for emergency slope stabilization work along U.S. Highway 12 about 0.2 miles west of the Mossyrock Dam in Lewis County.
This spring, crews discovered the hillside above the highway had begun to shift. To help prevent debris from falling onto the roadway, crews will remove unstable soil and reinforce the slope with large rocks. The work will help protect travelers and the highway while reducing the risk of unexpected closures, WSDOT stated in the release
• Monday, Aug. 3 and Tuesday, Aug. 4: Crews installed signs and concrete barriers along U.S. Highway 12 between mile markers 89.5 and 90.5 near the Mossyrock Dam. The barriers will reduce traffic to a single alternating lane through the work zone for the duration of the project.
• Wednesday, Aug. 5, through Friday, Sept. 11: Travelers in both directions of U.S. Highway 12 between mile markers 89.5 and 90.5 will alternate through a single lane 24 hours a day. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., flaggers will direct travelers to follow a pilot car through the work zone. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes. From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., and on weekends, a temporary traffic signal will direct travelers through the single lane.
