An 85-year-old driver triggered a two-vehicle wreck in Mason County Monday afternoon, according to Washington State Patrol.

The 85-year-old woman from Neah Bay and her 75-year-old male passenger, also from the same town, were hurt and taken to area hospitals. She was taken to St. Michael Medical Center in Kitsap County, while the man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to State Patrol.

Troopers say a failure to yield triggered the crash.

About 12:40 p.m. Monday, the two people from Neah Bay were headed south on state Route 3, east of Hood Canal. Meanwhile, a 65-year-old man from Montana was headed north on the same highway.

Troopers say southbound traffic was stopped for a driver trying to make a left turn.

However, the woman from Neah Bay, according to State Patrol, failed to yield to traffic and swerved into the northbound lane, crashing into the Montana man's vehicle. He was not hurt, according to State Patrol.

The road was partially blocked for five hours.
