Fifty Years Back: Democracy works in Chehalis’ win over Elma

WEEK 3: ‘The Royal Bleep,’ and a transfer debuts

Posted

Up by six points in the third quarter, facing fourth-and-7 on the Elma 37-yard line, Chehalis coach Orson Christensen had an idea for a fake punt.

His players had a better one.

“The team — we stress democracy — outvoted me,” he said.

So the Bearcats ran with the players’ preference: a fumblerooski. The snap went to shield-man Mike Jacaway, who stepped forward and put it between Rick Rakoz’ legs. Rakoz waited while Jacaway feinted to one side behind a pulling line, then exploded the other way, slicing upfield for a 37-yard touchdown that sealed Chehalis’ 12-0 win.

It was the second time the Bearcats — who had a reputation as a team with a deep bag of tricks — had pulled that specific play out, after they pulled it off for a 55-yard touchdown against North Thurston the season before.

Quotables

- “We got the royal (bleep) ... I wasn’t displeased with our boys at all. We outplayed Quinault to all hell. But I was certainly displeased with the officiating. Every time we started moving the ball we got a personal foul, and twice we ran for gains of 24 yards and a referee threw a flag before the tackle was made… If Quinault makes it to the state playoffs, the officials will have gotten them there.” — Oakville coach Don Ashinger, after the Acorns were flagged for 22 penalties in a 22-8 loss to Quinault

- “It made me feel good to get a pass interference call for a change. It means we are now getting close enough to a receiver to get one.” — Adna coach Bert Downs. The Pirates were flagged for PI, but also came down with three interceptions in a 22-6 win over Rainier

Statline of the Week

Centralia senior Tom Hartman needed to wait two weeks before being eligible to play after transferring in from Central Catholic (Ore.), and started his season for the Tigers with 106 rushing yards in a 13-12 loss to Camas.
