Fifty years back: Snapping a streak against Toledo

1973 WEEK 4: ‘The Mike and Al Show’ and the ‘Big Orange Special’

Posted

Ted Hippi had gone nearly a decade between losses as Toledo’s head coach — admittedly boosted by a three-year break away from the program — before seeing his streak snapped in Week 2 to Onalaska.

That still left a whole lot of South Central League squads looking to get their first win over Hippi in a long time. Among those were the Mossyrock Vikings, whose freshmen were still in diapers in 1960, the last time Mossy downed Toledo.

On Sept. 29, 1973, the Vikings reset that clock, coming back from a six-point halftime deficit to come out with a 20-12 win.

Toledo won the yardage battle 299-214, but Mossyrock evened the scales with three interceptions on defense. In the third quarter, quarterback Terry Stamper tied the game up on a 2-yard run, then found Lloyd George on the two-point conversion to put the Vikings ahead. That’s where the scoreline would stay, until Stamper hit Ron Birley for a 6-yard touchdown to give Mossyrock a bit of insurance.

Quick Hits

  • “It was the Mike and Al Show again here Friday night,” The Chronicle’s recap of Morton’s 44-6 win over Tenino began, “Because what Mike Herron didn’t do, Al Evans did.” Evans went 7 for 15 through the air for 208 passing yards and three touchdowns, and also ran in a score. Two of his touchdown passes went to Herron, who also racked up 56 yards and a TD on the ground, scored a two-point conversion, and kicked a field goal for good measure.
  • Centralia earned its first league win of the season, beating Elma 21-7. It was a meaningful win for Centralia coach Skip Raish, who had come back to the Hub City after leading the Eagles for two years.

Statline of the Week

Don Davis (Napavine) ran the ball four times for 136 yards. As a team, Napavine — dubbed the “Big Orange Special” in the Chronicle’s recap, put up 533 total yards, the most for any area team thus far in the season, in a 42-6 pounding of Rainier.
