Fifty Years Back: Twin City Clash (Part 1)

1973 WEEK 2: A program begins anew, and Morton’s star rises

Playing the first of two rivalry clashes of the season away from home, the Centralia students and spirit squad trucked a cannon the four miles south to Chehalis.

According to the recap the next day, they shouldn’t have exerted themselves, because “the Tigers had enough firepower of their own” in a 20-0 win in what then was dubbed the Shrine Duel.

“I was pleased with our whole team,” said first-year Centralia coach Skip Raish, fresh off of his first win as a skipper. “Their attitude and desire to come back after a bad week and play ball the way they can was satisfying.”

The Tigers’ offense relied primarily on quarterback Ed LeBaron handing the ball off to his two weapons in the backfield. Jeff Forrest (dubbed “Mr. Inside” in the Chronicle’s recap) went for 44 yards on 11 carries, while Brad Brumbaugh (“Mr. Outside”) took 21 carries for 61 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

On defense, Centralia held Chehalis to just 71 total yards — 23 on the ground, 48 through the air — in front of a crowd estimated to be at least 3,500 strong.

Boistfort’s Back

After sitting out Week 1 with a bye, the Braves of Boistfort took the field for the first time since 1965. Rainier didn’t celebrate the occasion with much sympathy for the newcomers, blasting its way to a 56-6 win, with over 450 total yards.

Herron Rambles as Morton Rolls

That was the headline for the Huskies’ second game of the season — a 33-14 win over Rochester — and it was pretty accurate. Morton tailback Mike Herron carried the ball 17 times for 175 yards and reached the end zone four times. And his season was just getting started.

Quotable

“When you take all the kids you had last year, who played their hearts out, and then have them come back and really want to play football, you can’t go anywhere but up.” — Onalaska coach Ed Simons, after the Loggers (who had lost 23 straight games coming into the season) won their second straight to begin the fall.
