Glamorous Camping Offered at Millersylvania State Park

If you want to go glamping this year — a word created from mashing together “glamorous” and “camping” — you might want to sign up now as the getaway is almost filled for the popular summer weekends.

Ryan and Tammy Johnson have created “Pampered Wilderness,” an alternative to traditional camping, at Millersylvania State Park, located about 7 miles northwest of Tenino. Glamorous camping, or glamping, offers all the enjoyment of nature, without the mess and inconvenience, the Johnsons said. The couple opened “Pampered Wilderness” in Millersylvania State Park a few years ago.

Pampered Wilderness’ white tents are hard to miss in Millersylvania’s wide swaths of greenery and often draw curious campers from throughout the park, Ryan said.

Tents have a wood pole base and a canvas cover. Six different tents are available with various themes. One follows a rustic theme, for example, with furniture made from reclaimed wood, another a safari theme, expressed with bamboo furnishings and green trim.

They are fitted with microwaves, barbecues and mini fridges and stocked with muffins, orange juice and coffee.

According to the Johnsons’ website, “Within the campgrounds of Millersylvania State Park, we hand picked and equipped select campsites with amenities that will make you feel like you’re in the lap of luxury. These well appointed canvas cabins are perfect for a hassle free weekend getaway that allows you to truly enjoy the wilderness surrounding you, and each other.

“From the moment you pull up, you will notice the beautifully decorated canvas cabins reminiscent of deluxe safari suites. Once settled in, relax on the front deck with a glass of wine while above, you’ll notice the splendor of the old growth fir and the wonderful aromas of nature in the breeze.

“As dusk falls, the hues of the candles and firelight take over setting the stage for a truly romantic evening.

“Upon wakening, start your day with a fresh pot of gourmet coffee. Once refreshed,  you can go hiking on one of the numerous trails the park has to offer, you can also swim, kayak or canoe on the beautiful Deep Lake.”

Millersylvania State Park sits on 842 acres filled with old-growth cedar and Doulas-fir trees. Deep Lake has more than 3,000 feet of freshwater shoreline, attracting boaters, swimmers and fishermen. More than 6 miles of trails await.

Other area highlights to take in on your stay at Pampered Wilderness (two-day minimum) can be found in Tenino, including Scatter Creek Winery, Aunt Kate’s Chocolates, the sandstone pool in the summer and the nearby animal sanctuary Wolf Haven International. Dinner at The Lady of the Lake restaurant at Offut Lake just down the road is recommended.
