Grange members to dedicate remodeled fair building at this year's fair

Cowlitz Prairie Grange

Cowlitz Prairie Grange met March 10 at 6:30 p.m., beginning with a potluck.

Grange aisle superintendent Thelma McLarty reported the Grange building remodeling on the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds is completed. There will be a dedication ceremony held at the front entrance opening day of the fair at 10 a.m.

The Gavel committee planned the format for the Gavel, which will be held May 16 at Logan Hill Grange at 2 p.m. Each participating Grange will furnish one program from the theme "Patriotic."

A letter was read from State Grange Master Terry Hunt about a leadership conference to be held at Fords Prairie Grange March 24 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Lecturer Doris Rogers reported about a lecturers conference at Panhandle. Eighty people attended the conference. They received information about new programs, and ideas were exchanged.

The Threshing Bee committee recommended the Grange purchase T-shirts with the 40th anniversary on them and make a program to be handed out listing events and times for each event. Ernie Conradi reported receiving a price on having a banner made to use in parades. He will get information on size, lettering and a final cost.

Ted Bryan, Cowlitz County deputy, spoke about the dictionaries for third-graders program in Cowlitz County. Grangers have given out dictionaries to every third-grade pupil in Cowlitz County and plan to continue the program for four years. Zula Bryan suggested the Grange Web site be put on the inside cover of the dictionaries.

Next meeting of Cowlitz Prairie Grange will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Lewis County Pomona Grange

March 6, Lewis Co. Pomona Grange met at Mossyrock Grange Hall, beginning with a 6:30 potluck.

Bobby Schaefer and Jack Reese presented a program on the trip the FFA took to Louisville, Ky., last fall.

May 1 and 2, the Grange will sponsor child identification at the Spring Youth Fair.

Lecturer Richard Kimball reported a talent contest will be 2 p.m. April 24 at Cowlitz Prairie Grange. A baking, sewing, arts and craft contests will be April 3 at St. Urban Grange. All entries must be in between 9 and noon. Judging will begin at noon. One does not have to be a member to enter these contests.

Junior Grange Camp held at Mayfield Youth Camp will be July 25-31. For information, contact Carol Kramer.

Next meeting will begin with a 6:30 p.m. potluck, meeting at 7:30, at St. Urban Grange Hall April 3.

Silver Creek Ethel Grange

March 9, Silver Creek Ethel Grange met beginning with a potluck.

Lewis County Sheriff John McCroskey presented a program about his hobby of carving old country Santas and cowboys.

It was reported the sale of Silver Creek hall has been completed, and there will be a rummage sale of items left March 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The 100-year anniversary of Silver Creek Ethel, Hope, Alpha and Forest Granges will be 1 p.m. today at St. Urban Grange Hall.

Next meeting will be April 13 beginning with a potluck at 6:30 p.m., meeting at 7:30.

Mossyrock Grange

Mossyrock Grange met March 10. The charter was draped for Ted Perkins, past master of the Grange and a member since 1937.

Alternate delegates to state convention, held in Pullman June 16-20, will be Marilyn Armit and Janice Browning.

The Grange plans to participate in the booths at Southwest Washington Fair. The Grange theme is "Our Abundant Food Fare."

Gavel meeting will be 2 p.m. May 16, with a patriotic theme, at Logan Hill Grange.

The Grange will purchase raffle tickets sent by State Grange Youth Group.

A conference will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fords Prairie Grange Hall, Centralia.

Soroptimist International of Centralia-Chehalis

Soroptimist International of Centralia-Chehalis met March 9 at Oasis Restaurant, Centralia.

President Valinda Gordon will send reminders about the SICC challenge to local service organizations to match the $1,000 donation to Valley View Medical Center.

Two honors awards, which will be presented April 27, for local women were approved: Cheri Raff, Centralia College associate dean of family and children's services, was named Woman of Distinction for 2004. Kathleen Eussen, Lewis County director of health and social services, received the Women Helping Women award for 2004.

District Director Suzanne Harris has scheduled a meeting with local club members at noon May 8 to discuss membership.

Next meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Shanghai Restaurant, Centralia.

Fords Prairie Grange

Continued planning for July 10 Second Annual "Chickin' 'n Pickin" charity event was discussed at the March 11 meeting of Fords Prairie Grange. Pope's Kids Place and Kids Kloset again will receive the proceeds.

It was voted not to enter a booth at Southwest Washington Fair. Ten dollars was donated to a state Grange youth raffle. One hundred dollars was donated to Swede Day Midsommer Festival.

Rachel Liddick will travel to Mexico in April to help build a church. It was voted to donate $101 to Liddick to complete her travel budget.

The Grange's licensed kitchen will be used for food preparation for a June Veterans Memorial Museum fund-raiser.

Logan Hill Grange will host Lewis County gavel meeting 2 p.m. May 16.

Pomona Grange will sponsor the child identification project at Youth Fair at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds May 1-2. Volunteers to cover six-hour shifts are desired. People may telephone Richard Kimball at 736-4465 before April 26.

State Master Terry Hunt will conduct the annual Grange leadership conference at the Grange Wednesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Baking, needlework, art, photography and crafts contests will be judged at the county level at St. Urban Grange April 3. Winners will be eligible for state competition at the June Washington State Grange convention in Pullman. Most contests are open to the public. A representative from Cross Insurance will be present to discuss changes in all types of insurance March 27 beginning with a 6:30 p.m. potluck; meeting at 7:30.



George Higby will give antique appraisals 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 10 for $3 per item. Proceeds go to charity. Grange kitchen will be open for refreshments.

Game Night is April 19 beginning with a 6 p.m. potluck followed by games.

Mother's Day Swedish pancake breakfast is 8 to 11 a.m. May 9.

Oakview Grange

Oakview Grange met March 11. Anthony Scarcella, David Lowe and Johnny Vancilla, fifth-graders from Oakview School, reported about Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.

Washington State Grange Deputy David Schaefer and his wife, Washington State Grange Chairwoman of Women's Activities Chris Schaefer, presented Betty Good a 50-year pin and certificate; a 65-year seal to Agnes Fagerness; and a 40-year seal to Evelyn Clark for their years of Grange service.

Ten youth raffle tickets for state Grange were purchased. The Salvation Army thanked the Grange for money donated.

Grange 100 year anniversary

Silver Creek Ethel Grange, Hope Grange, Forest Grange and Alpha Grange will celebrate their 100th year anniversary 1 p.m. today at St. Urban Grange Hall, near Winlock.

Washington state Grange officers plan to attend. Entertainment will consist of histories of each Grange, with displays of the Granges' history such as pictures, records and awards earned. The band Sidekicks will perform throughout the afternoon. Refreshments will be served.

Newaukum Valley Women's Golf Club

Newaukum Valley Women's Golf Club will hold its annual kickoff luncheon Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Newaukum Valley Golf Course. Day's play will begin April 1. For luncheon reservations, telephone Marlene at 748-2223.

Newaukum Grange

Newaukum Grange met March 11 with 20 members present. Herb Yantis reported the audit of the books was accepted.

Carol Lee Kraemer reported on the sewing and crafts contest at St. Urban Grange April 3. Item to be judged need to be entered by noon.

A garage sale will be held at the Grange April 21 and 22. Table rent is $5.

A leadership conference will be held from 1 to 3:30 Wednesday at Fords Prairie Grange.

Youth Fair will be April 30 and May 1-2. People or money are desired for the child identification program. Twenty-five dollars was donated by the Grange.

Third and fourth degrees were presented at the Grange March 7. A dance to benefit FFA and FCCLA scholarship will be July 31. The Grange purchased state Grange raffle tickets.

Next meeting will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. preceded by a 6:30 potluck.

Vader Garden Club

Vader Garden Club met March 9 beginning with a luncheon supplied by Chris Booth, Carol Broom and Mildred Dunham. Martha Lampett, Esther Gowing and Carol Broom decorated the tables.

The May mystery trip will be a visit to All Season's Nursery and Castle Rock Nursery, Castle Rock, with lunch at Hatties.

Nine members will attend Winolequa's Spring Tea and Flower Show.

Martha Lampitt, Esther Gowing, Joy Finley and Sally Coady trimmed and cleaned the rose garden at Vader Elementary School March 10.

Shirlene Binion received a gift in appreciation for service to the club.

Secret sister gifts were exchanged. Members brought arts and crafts to share.

Akitsa Club

Akitsa Club, a member of General Federation of Women's Clubs, met at the home of Marion Osterby.

Mary Ingwersen presented a proposed slate of officers for the coming two-year term. The candidates will be voted on at the May meeting and take office in June.

Osterby reported on attending a health department meeting on food service. The health department will not oversee potlucks or any other time when food is prepared and given, and not paid for.

Alice Pitchford reported that the flag given in the airport project was showing wear and had been taken down to be mended. A temporary flag is currently flying.

Two members brought plastic flowers to be used by Mildred Hickman to make arrangements for graves that are not attended.

A spring conference will be held 9 a.m. April 16 at Fords Prairie Grange. One of the programs will be about Mooseheart.

State spring convention in Spokane is April 22-26.

Hulda Underhill reported the new care group called Monday Afternoon Fellowship will begin the first Monday in April at Mountain View Baptist Church from 1 to 4 p.m. Fifty dollars will be given to its public address system.

Fifty dollars were donated to Friends of the Library to go for reupholster of the chairs.

Osterby presented a program about keeping and maintaining records of lives. and books to assist one.

Lewis County Garden Club

The first quarterly meeting of Lewis County Garden Club will be Thursday at Adna Evangelical Church Fireside Room. Registration will be 10 a.m. with coffee and pastries. Speaker will be Southwest Washington Fair Floral Building Judge, Jean Davolt, who will give a program on what the judges look for when evaluating cut flowers and other entries, as well as the floral designs.

She will demonstrate flower arranging techniques, and will critique arrangements brought by members. After the program, there will be a business meeting; the central topic will be the Lawn and Garden Show, which starts Friday. A potluck luncheon will follow.
