'He has a gun': Judge sets bail for man accused of attempted murder at Thurston County home

A 41-year-old man accused of shooting a person in the head is being held in the Thurston County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Yelm police arrested Khristopher Carl Robinson Sunday evening after being dispatched to the 15200 block of Chad Drive Southeast.

A woman called 911 to report Robinson was trying to break into the home, according to court records. During the call, the dispatcher reported hearing someone yelling about a gun, Police Sgt. Kevin Taylor told The Olympian.

An officer contacted Robinson outside the home and tased him to prevent him from re-entering the home, court records show. A sergeant reportedly found a man in a bathroom inside the home with a gunshot wound to the face.

Taylor said the man was first taken to Madigan Army Medical Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and then to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The bullet passed through the man's cheek and back of his head, he said.

Court records indicate the man was in critical condition in an intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center as of Monday. However, Taylor said Tuesday that he last heard the man was alert, walking and talking.

Officers booked Robinson into the county jail on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, domestic violence, while armed and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

On Monday, Superior Court Judge Carol Murphy found probable cause for the first crime as well as two counts of second-degree assault, domestic violence. The latter two counts are because he is accused of pointing his firearm at the woman as she fled the scene with a child.

Murphy set bail after finding there was a substantial danger Robinson may commit a violent crime, seek to intimidate witnesses or interfere with the case. She also barred Robinson from contacting the woman, her children, the man who was shot and any witnesses.

The jail roster lists Robinson's occupation as "military." A pretrial report does not specify a current residence, but it does include the address for the Joint Base Lewis-McChord headquarters under a supplemental information section.

The report indicates Robinson has no known adult criminal convictions. However, he does have an open case in Yelm Municipal Court in which he's accused of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence.

The investigation

A probable cause statement describes the investigation into the incident from the perspective of law enforcement.

Yelm officers responded to the home on Chad Drive at 7:17 p.m. Sunday after a woman called 911 to report Robinson, who used to live in the home, was trying to kick down the front door.

While on the line, a dispatcher reported hearing someone say, "stop get out," "he has a gun" and possible gunshots in the background, according to the statement. Officers arrived at the scene minutes later and contacted Robinson as he walked down the driveway.

Officers reported that Robinson turned away and walked towards the front door despite multiple commands to stop, according to the statement. An officer then used a taser on Robinson twice and detained him, according to court documents.

The officer recovered a loaded handgun in Robinson's waistband and two additional magazines in his cargo pants pockets, according to the probable cause statement. Additionally, the officer reported seeing what appeared to be blood on Robinson's feet and sandals.

When asked if anyone was hurt inside, Robinson allegedly said something to the effect of "you'll find out," the statement says.

As officers searched the home, a sergeant found a man in the master bathroom stand-up shower with an "obvious" gunshot wound to the face. The man reportedly was lying in a pool of blood and was unresponsive.

After clearing the home, officers began rendering aid to the man until medics arrived to take over and transport him to a hospital.

An officer later interviewed the woman who initially called 911 and fled the home. She said her camera doorbell alerted her to Robinson, who she said demanded to be let inside.

The woman said she refused to open the door and threatened to call the police. She reported that Robinson then went around the back and kicked in a back door, according to the statement.

Once inside, Robinson allegedly drew his gun and went upstairs to where the man was located.

The woman said she heard a gunshot so she grabbed her child and ran next door. She reported that Robinson pointed his gun at her as she ran away but he did not shoot.

The woman described the man upstairs as a "romantic partner," according to the statement. She said Robinson had not lived at the home since February or March when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting her.

A sergeant observed video from a home security camera that showed Robinson attempting to enter through the front door multiple times by inputting a key code and kicking the door.

In a final recording, the sergeant observed Robinson pointing his handgun at the woman as she, her child and a dog fled from the home. Screams could reportedly be heard in the video.

The statement indicates an officer collected blood samples from the shower, one fired pistol cartridge chambered in a .45-caliber and one projectile located within the drywall behind the fiberglass shower.
