A man who died after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers on July 2 in Spanaway has been officially identified.

Ivan Zaystev was 41 when he was killed near 205th Street East and 5th Avenue Court East, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Medical Examiner's Office said Zaystev died of multiple gunshot wounds and listed his cause of death as homicide.

The News Tribune reported that Zaystev fired shots at a trooper who attempted to stop his vehicle for a traffic violation and then at other officers called in to pursue him as he drove away.

A July 5 news release from the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, which took over the investigation, said that the initial traffic-stop attempt occurred at about 10:16 a.m. on state Route 512 near Steele Street.

A Washington State Patrol trooper and a Pierce County deputy continued the pursuit after locating Zaystev's vehicle near the 19000 block of state Route 7 and following him south on the highway. The chase ended in a neighborhood off state Route 507.

The details about the initial traffic stop were discovered later in the evening of July 2 and have some discrepancies with information shared at the first press briefing, the news release said.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office posted a video on X stating that Zaystev exited his vehicle in a dead end road and continued to shoot at officers. Zaystev was shot by officers in the resulting exchange. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but Zaystev was pronounced dead at the scene, the video said.

No law enforcement officers were injured.
