Jill Penhallegon Durgin passed away on Aug. 11, 2024. She was born on Jan. 7, 1946, in Centralia, Washington, to George Ernest (Ernie) and Marjorie Bethene (Billie) Penhallegon, and graduated from Centralia High School in 1964. Two years later she received an associate of arts degree from Centralia College. It was during her years there that a relationship was born and grew with Ed Durgin. They both continued their studies at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, and Jill graduated with a bachelor of arts in education degree in 1968. Later that year, in September, Jill and Ed married and began a life together that spanned almost 56 years.

Jill began her elementary teaching career in Creswell, Oregon, while Ed pursued graduate studies at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Later, after a move to Tigard, Oregon, she was employed as the director of a reading program and again as an elementary school teacher with the Tigard School District. It was the latter position that warmed her heart the most. Jill loved challenging her students and being challenged by them as well.

Embedded deeply in Jill’s DNA was the ability to foster compassionate and caring relationships. She was the quintessential caregiver and hostess. She loved hosting gatherings and meals for family and friends and cherished opportunities to share stories, share experiences and develop friendships.

In retirement, Jill enjoyed serving as a Sunday school teacher at Vancouver’s First United Methodist Church and more recently she welcomed the chance to serve as a board member for the Great Oaks Academy (Little Acorn) Preschool, which is housed at the church.

A love of playing games was developed during Jill’s youth, and she continued to follow this passion as a member of several local bridge groups. Ed often teased her when he told her that the only thing she liked better than playing bridge was winning when she played!

Family and family life were Jill’s greatest loves. Vacations, shared meals, games, celebrations or any time spent together were thoroughly enjoyed and nourished Jill’s heart. She loved sharing her wisdom with family members and cherished the joys they added to her life.

Survivors include husband Ed; her sister Sandra Duncan of Olympia, Washington; daughter Tricia of Moscow, Idaho; son Joseph (Jill) of The Woodlands, Texas; and granddaughters Elaine (Moscow) and Penny and grandson Rex (The Woodlands).

A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Vancouver First United Methodist Church, 401 East 33rd St., Vancouver, Washington. Lunch will be served following the service.

Interment will be at the Claquato Cemetery in Chehalis, Washington.
