Jess Bowers, Marty Poirrier compete for Winlock City Council seat

Posted

Jess Bowers and Marty Poirrier, candidates to serve on the Winlock City Council, say managing residential growth will be key for the city moving forward.

With one seat on the city council available, the two received the same three questions from The Chronicle and were asked to limit their responses to 150 words per question.

Ballots are due by 8 p.m. on Nov. 7. If a voter hasn’t received their ballot, the county auditor’s office recommends visiting votewa.gov and selecting “my ballot,” calling 360-740-1278 or visiting 351 NW North St., Chehalis.

If a registered voter has moved, they can update their registration with any of the options.

Jess Bowers:

Going forward, what do you see as the biggest challenge facing Winlock?

Infrastructure. Water, sewer, roads and bridges.

What is the biggest area for growth?

I live in Grand Prairie Estates. I think it will continue to grow, as well as the 505 corridor.

Why do you think you're the right candidate to serve on the city council?

I think my background in critical infrastructure will benefit the council, both with planning and funding. I have also lived all over the world. I just moved back to Winlock three years ago. I have a broad perspective, not just a small town perspective. I grew up in Winlock and graduated from Winlock High School in 1987. I have deep family ties to the town, as well as lifelong friends.

Marty Poirrier:

Going forward, what do you see as the biggest challenge facing Winlock?

The biggest challenge facing Winlock is the divide in our community.

This divide is caused by misinformation and tensions being purposefully heightened. I will make sure that the city is as transparent as possible by adding cameras to the public meetings, using social media to put out notices and information, and continuing to make myself available to any constituent who has an issue or idea.

What is the biggest area for growth?

The biggest area to grow is Winlock’s economy to match its residential growth. We need more services and jobs here in Winlock. I plan on doing my part by keeping taxes low and creating more incentives for businesses and employers to come to the area.

Why do you think you're the right candidate to serve on the city council?

I have helped steer the City of Winlock into one of the most financially stable positions it has been in for years, despite the recent pandemic and political climate. I have helped write and pass common sense ordinances that make Winlock a place where people can live freely and safely. My record and integrity during my tenure should speak for themselves.
