Leaf collection event set for Centralia Saturday; Gardeners can pick up foliage for compost

Do you have an abundance of fall foliage that you’re looking to put to good use?

Volunteers from the Washington State University Lewis County Master Recycler Composter program will host a free donation program on Saturday at the Floral Park Sustainability Project in Centralia. Volunteers will accept bags of leaves from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Bag your leaves and give them to gardeners who would love to use them for compost or mulch,” Melanie Case, recycling program coordinator for the Lewis County Solid Waste Utility, said in a Lewis County news release.

Volunteers will also accept donations, which will help support education programs. Gardeners can pick up leaves for their garden on a first-come, first-served basis, and volunteers will assist with questions about composting or mulching a yard with leaves.

“Leaves must be from healthy trees,” Case said. “Volunteers will also not be set up to accept grass clippings, other yard debris or garbage. They will be inspecting bags before accepting them.”

A similar event earlier this month exchanged 224 bags of leaves, with seven still available. The Floral Park Sustainability Project is located at the intersection of Floral Street and South Tower Avenue.
