WSU Extension Lewis County Master Recycler Composter volunteers are hosting ta leaf exchange and styrofoam recycling event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot outside the Lewis County Central Solid Waste Transfer Station.

The station is located at 1411 S. Tower Ave. in Centralia.

The volunteers will collect bagged leaves and styrofoam items.

The LeMay Mobile Shredding Truck will be on site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accept sensitive documents customers would like shredded and recycled. The document shredding truck will only be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Customers may drop off up to three bags or boxes they would like to have shredded. After the event, the shredded paper will be taken to a recycling facility.

Those bringing leaves are asked to bring them in plastic lawn or leaf bags and give them to volunteers. Those who would like leaves for their garden can stop by and pick up bags of leaves as long as supplies last. The leaf exchange is free but volunteers will accept donations to support their educational programs. Leaves will be available on a first-come, first-served basis as long as supplies last. Volunteers will be available to answer questions about composting or mulching gardens with leaves.

“Bag up your fall leaves and give them to gardeners who would love to use them for compost or mulch,” said Melanie Case, recycling program coordinator for the utility, which operates the transfer station. “Leaves must be from healthy trees. Volunteers will also not be set up to accept grass clippings, other yard debris or garbage. They will be inspecting bags before accepting them.”

Those dropping off styrofoam are asked to keep their styrofoam in separated clear plastic bags for dropoff. The styrofoam must be clean and free of tape and labels.
