I had an issue with my tax return.
After calling the IRS and waiting on hold for a very, very long time, I finally reached a human representative who researched my issue.
Several times, I had to be put on hold again while she tried to gather information. After quite a while, my issue was finally resolved.
Before I hung up, I simply told this woman that I very much appreciated her help. If this issue had not been resolved on the phone, it would have required several hours of paperwork and more postal fees, so after this resolution, I was able to breathe a sigh of relief.
When I thanked this woman for her efforts, she just about broke down in tears because people are so frustrated with the lack of available agents and take it out on the humans who do try to help them.
This interaction reminded me that no matter how deep our noses are buried into our phone screens, we are social creatures. We need positive human contact, and a kind word can be more important than any of us knows.
The next time someone performs a service for you, just take the time to say thank you, that you appreciate that person’s time and effort to make your life a little more convenient.
The woman I spoke to told me that I made her day and that very much made my day.
