Letter to the editor: A vote for Trump is a vote for Christian Nationalism

Posted

There is nothing Christian about Christian Nationalism.

Christian Nationalism believes that political violence is justified. Jesus advocated for non-violence and radical love in “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

To recognize the divine nature in our neighbor, no matter what race, religion, wealth status, gender or political views is a Christian value. Christian Nationalists attack abortion and gay marriage rights; neither is mentioned in the Bible.

Christian Nationalism’s goal is to use political power to establish a “Christian nation.” To control what we read, who we marry, when we have a family. In other words, control our minds and bodies (see Project 2025, T=Youtube, and read the Republican official platform).

Jesus rejected political power.

Christian Nationalism is on the rise and is related to “the love of power, not the power of love (see Representative James Talarico, Youtube).”

The first time many of us were confronted with Christian Nationalism was on Jan. 6 when we saw Christian Nationalists violently entering the capitol, attacking police officers, causing death in the name of Jesus and Donald Trump. They have turned Jesus into a violent, misogynistic, racist, “gun-toting, gay bashing, science denying, fear-mongering,” wanna-be dictator, or fascist (see Representative Talarico).

Because of Christian Nationalism, women no longer have reproductive rights.

Twenty states now have Trump bans on abortions.

Trump’s “late-term abortion” is not a thing. It is very rare (less than 1%) that a pregnancy is terminated after 21 weeks of pregnancy, and it is related to such things as saving the mother’s life or severe abnormalities. Trump made false claims about “late-term abortion” during the debate, experts say.

There is an “increasing risk of criminal charges for women who experience miscarriage,” according to PBS News, Jan. 9, 2024.

The testimonies of multiple women whose lives have been threatened because of Trump are wrenching to hear. Losing this right is frightening, when we know 10 to 20 in 100 pregnancies end in miscarriage. The Trump abortion ban has caused a woman to bleed out in the lobby bathroom of a hospital because doctors did not wish to risk fines, loss of license or a prison term.

Miscarriages can threaten the woman’s life if left untreated.

The distraught husband dialed 911 for help.

Trump brags that he “did that,” overturned Roe v. Wade.

In an interview with Elon Musk, Trump states that he will dismantle the Department of Education. The removal of the Department of Education is part of Project 2025, to have the government pay for private schools for Christian Nationalists.

Without the Department of Education, we will lose funds and the right to public education. In that interview, Trump muses that some “states won’t do so well.”

None of us will “do so well” under Trump.
