In the Thursday, Oct. 29, edition of The Chronicle, letter writer Mr. Bruce Peterson opined he was tired of the whining of the Democratic Party. In his article, Mr. Peterson made several statements that warrant scrutiny.
As a whining Democrat, I would like to comment on Mr. Peterson's letter and do some scrutinizing.
First, President Trump did win, but not with the "majority not seen in many years." Just 12 years ago, President Obama won by five million votes for a majority of 51.1%. In contrast, President Trump won by 2.3 million votes, a plurality (not majority) of 49.8%. But a win is a win.
Yes, President Trump campaigned on a series of significant issues affecting all Americans. To date (and primarily due to the latest Congress's sad situation), he has not delivered on any of them. Governing by executive fiat seems to me to be only an expression of that president's leadership style and not in the country's best interests, no matter who the president is.
Again, yes, the cost of housing is rising at an alarming rate. That is not due to any leadership issues but, more likely, a combination of market pressures (profit before compassion), greed, bureaucracy and a rising shortage of skilled workers. I do agree with Mr. Peterson that part of the housing problem is the zoning laws that affect the industry.
Illegal immigration is a problem, but not as Mr. Peterson indicates. Finger-pointing will never solve the problem; bipartisan restructuring of immigration policy will go a long way toward solving it. That solution was proposed by whining Democrats in the Senate, only to have the Republicans vote it down.
Unelected, inexperienced personal friends should not ever be allowed to meddle in governmental policy and functions. DOGE is an excellent example of a reasonable idea (fraud detection and removal) gone bad. The harm done by the willy-nilly, axe-wielding approach to restructuring departments will take years to fix.
I would love to see the research done or facts proven that make the claim that the Biden "Family" and the Obama Administration should go to prison for interference in elections and weaponizing the justice system to keep Trump out of office. I suspect Mr. Peterson has been listening to and watching the wrong media and has consumed too much of the conspiracy Kool-Aid.
Mishandling classified information? Seriously? A ballroom and bathroom full of American secrets in cardboard boxes vs. a file cabinet in a garage with personal papers? Mr. Peterson has every right to be sick and tired of the Democrats' whining ways. He has every right to express his opinion on anything. He also has the right to be wrong in his way of thinking about Mr. Trump.
I suspect seven million Americans expressing their opinions concerning Mr. Trump's apparent disdain for the average citizen would agree they have a point.
