Letter to the editor: Anonymous complaints triggering career-ending outcomes is concerning

I am writing as a deeply concerned and disheartened community member regarding the termination of Sgt. Tracy Murphy after more than three decades with the Centralia Police Department.

Whatever a person’s politics may be, the firing of a 35-year law enforcement veteran should not happen under a cloud of unanswered questions, anonymous allegations, overlapping relationships and limited public transparency.

When someone has spent decades serving this community, the public deserves more than rumors, partial explanations and silence. We deserve to know whether the decision was supported by clear findings, a fair process and evidence strong enough to justify ending a career of public service.

Sgt. Murphy’s record in this community is not small. He has served Centralia for decades, led the Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team, worked alongside agencies including Centralia, Chehalis, the DEA, and the Department of Corrections, and was publicly identified as JNET supervisor when the team received the Chief’s Award. He also served as a Centralia K-9 officer with K-9 Bak.

His work has been tied to serious drug enforcement efforts in a county that has been deeply impacted by addiction, trafficking and public safety concerns.

That kind of service does not make anyone above accountability. But it should require that accountability be handled with absolute integrity, transparency and fairness.

What troubles me most is not simply that an investigation occurred. Allegations should be reviewed. Misconduct, if proven, should have consequences. But when the original complaint is reportedly unfounded and additional issues arise through the course of an investigation, the community has a right to ask whether the process remained fair, impartial and appropriately scoped.

This is a small county. Relationships overlap. Politics are personal. Elections are contentious. That is exactly why the process must be beyond reproach. If a sheriff candidate and longtime officer can be placed on leave, investigated and fired without the public receiving a clear explanation of the factual basis for that decision, then public trust is not strengthened. It is damaged.

I am not asking for special treatment for Tracy Murphy. I am asking for the same thing every citizen should want: transparency, due process and confidence that decisions of this magnitude are not influenced by politics, personality conflicts or insider relationships.

A termination like this will rock a community. It already has. Until the public is given a clear, factual accounting of what happened and why, many of us will be left with serious concerns about whether justice was actually served.

Anonymous complaints triggering career-ending outcomes is concerning especially without transparent findings.
