Letter to the editor: Aspergillus mold — a hidden threat in our homes

Posted

Two years ago, my family began renting what seemed like a safe and well-kept home in Lacey.

Soon after moving in, they started suffering from unexplained fatigue, coughing and other respiratory problems. These symptoms persisted and worsened over time.

What no one knew was that the attic and ventilation system were contaminated with aspergillus mold — a toxic mold that can cause severe and sometimes life-threatening illness.

By the time the problem was discovered, mold spores had spread throughout the house, infiltrating furniture, clothing, carpets and even personal keepsakes. Nearly everything had to be thrown away. A new home was rented; however, they are starting from scratch, much like a family whose home was destroyed by fire.

You can help by visiting the GoFundMe page titled “Support the Trolsons.” In the meantime, relatives are supporting the family directly so they can purchase beds and furniture. My stepdaughter and one of her teenagers remain under medical care today, dealing with the long-term effects of mold exposure.

This is not an isolated case. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer from allergic or chronic aspergillosis each year, and tens of thousands develop invasive infections that can be fatal.

Unfortunately, many rental homes are not inspected for mold after water damage, leaving tenants unknowingly exposed.

The warning signs are often subtle — musty odors, visible mold spots or lingering respiratory symptoms — but the consequences can be devastating. We need better public awareness, stronger inspection requirements and clear protections for renters to prevent other families from facing what ours has endured.

If you suspect mold in your home, especially after any kind of leak or flooding, don’t wait. Have your property inspected and seek medical advice. Mold isn’t just unsightly — it can destroy health, homes and lives.
