Letter to the editor: Calling attention to the state of the historic Salzer Valley Schoolhouse

Posted

I wish to bring attention to people in our area about the poor condition of the historic Salzer Valley schoolhouse. It is badly in need of immediate repair, and the few members who belong to the Salzer Valley Community Club are unable to take on the chore by themselves.

This iconic schoolhouse is on a register at the Washington state Historical Society as a historic landmark, but it’s about to become history.

You may google “Historic Salzer Valley Schoolhouse” to view a documentary by Brad Chamberlain if you would like to see what it looks like, both inside and out. Also, there is a book recently published by Chronicle columnist Julie McDonald titled “Carol Ponder and the history of Salzer Valley” that will give you more information about the history.

If you would like more information, you may contact Josh Heinricker at 360-807-0994.

This old schoolhouse is located at milepost 4 on the Salzer Valley Road. Turn to the left (east) at the foot of the Gold Street viaduct in Centralia.
