Letter to the editor: Chronicle’s ‘Look Back in Time’ stirs memories of partner and musician

Posted

I enjoy the "A Look Back in Time" section of The Chronicle. I know I'm going to learn interesting things about our area's past, and I often find something historically significant or personal about family or friends.

Recently, in the Dec. 27 paper, I read about Mike Deasy, a musician who moved to Mossyrock from California.

My late partner, Dave Shriver, was a lifelong friend with Mike, because they were both band members with Eddie Cochran; Dave being the bass player. When Eddie passed away tragically young, Dave became the bass player for Trini Lopez for 10 years and traveled the world many times.

He also played with Frank Sinatra and recorded with many famous stars of the time.

Dave, too, became disenchanted with the "Hollywood scene." He recalled flying down the hills of Malibu with his young family in the car, flames licking the tires from yet another wildfire. He had had it! When Mike Deasy told him of the house across the street from him that was for sale, Dave bought it sight unseen and moved to Mossyrock.

When I met Dave, he was in 14 different groups, "just for fun!," ranging from jazz to rock to big band swing, including 24 years in the Olympia Symphony with his standup bass.

Dave and I were together for six years until his death in 2012 and he never stopped playing (and probably still is).
