Letter to the editor: Have clear information on Centralia levy before you vote

Posted

The Centralia School District’s Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) replacement levy election is Feb. 10. We want you to have clear information when you vote.

The proposed levy is a replacement of the current levy that expires in December 2026. It is not a new tax, but a continuation of local funding used to bridge the gap between state and federal funding and the actual cost of serving our students.

The school board carefully weighed the needs of our students and the urgency for improved academic outcomes against the tax burden on the community before setting the requested amounts: $7,150,000 for 2027; $7,640,000 for 2028; and $8,157,000 for 2029.

The estimated tax rate for the first year (2027) is $1.70 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For a median-valued home in Centralia ($400,000), this represents approximately $56.66 per month or $680 per year. It is approximately $7 more per month than the current levy.

The levy funds important programs for our students, kindergarten through graduation (K-12). Levy dollars support K-12 programs, including safety and security, athletics, music, school counselors, nurses and special education services. It also funds academic interventions, instructional coaches and technology.

The school board remains committed to being good fiscal stewards while striving to provide the high-quality education our students deserve.

Please remember to submit your ballot by Tuesday, Feb. 10. There is additional levy information on our website at centraliaschooldistrict.org.

Centralia is a great place to live and work. The Centralia School District is a district striving to better serve our students and our community. I am proud to serve as its superintendent.
