Today, a lot of people don’t like to discuss politics. Families have been broken up over discussions about politics. I think this fact is so widely known that I don’t need to waste space proving it.
There has been a lot spoken by opinion writers about the political division in our country. Most votes in Congress or in the Senate split along party lines. There is not much the two sides agree on.
One thing I think most people agree on: regardless of which party they support, they agree that politicians can’t be trusted. When I asked Google AI if most people trusted politicians or the government, it said, “A recent survey found only 33% of Americans trust the federal government, while nearly half (47%) don’t trust it, according to the Partnership for Public Service.”
To me, that number understates America’s distrust in our elected officials. Why don’t people trust politicians? I think most people of either party affiliation think that most politicians are in it for the money. It’s not that they get paid as much as CEOs of big corporations; it is that being in government gives them access to corrupt ways to build wealth.
If what I think is true, then both sides can agree that we need to pass legislation that makes it difficult to profit illegally or at least unethically from government service. For one thing, we should all get behind laws that forbid politicians to use insider information for trading stocks. We should all support House Resolution 5106, The Restore Trust in Congress Act.
Please call U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez at 360-225-3536 and tell her to support The Restore Trust in Congress Act.
Both sides should support bills that make it difficult for politicians to make money corruptly or for big corporations or rich individuals to buy representation in our government. Both sides should work together to write legislation that makes dark money illegal (political contributions that cannot be traced to a person or organization that is financing it).
Both sides should make it illegal for people to work for a government agency that regulates an industry and then walk into a high paid job from that industry.
Let’s all work together to get big money out of politics.
