At a time when trust in government is low, transparency and community involvement matter more than ever, especially in law enforcement.
That’s why it’s worth asking: is Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders the most libertarian sheriff in Washington?
Not because of party labels, but because of approach.
A libertarian-leaning sheriff would prioritize openness with the public, clear communication about decisions, and a willingness to involve the community rather than operate behind closed doors. Just as important is the use of voluntary action, empowering residents to be part of solutions instead of relying solely on top-down enforcement.
Public safety doesn’t have to mean more control. It can also mean more trust, more visibility, and more cooperation between law enforcement and the people they serve.
When a sheriff leans into transparency and encourages community-driven efforts, it builds legitimacy in a way mandates never will.
So the question stands: are we seeing a shift toward a more open, community-centered model of policing, and is Sheriff Sanders leading that shift?
That’s a conversation worth having.
