Letter to the editor: Let’s acknowledge where President Trump is exceptional

Posted

Mr. Perry's recent letter, which accuses Democrats of asserting, "No matter what President Trump does, it’s wrong," warrants clarification. Political dynamics are considerably more intricate and nuanced than such an absolute statement implies.

As a registered independent, I observe the entire political spectrum without allegiance to any party, which reveals to me significant weaknesses at the presidential level on both sides. It shouldn’t be about the subjective nature of right or wrong.

Rather, the most appropriate way to evaluate a president is by measuring competence against incompetence. There have been dozens of books written that point out Trump’s weaknesses. In the spirit of fairness, it is only right to acknowledge the president's unique competencies.

President Trump demonstrates an exceptional talent for deception. While the propensity to lie is not uncommon among politicians, he elevates this trait to an extraordinary level. This skill is remarkable and undeniable.

Another of Mr. Trump’s uniquely distinguishing characteristics is his frequent party switching. His political journey includes identifying as a Republican in 1987, switching to the Reform and Independent parties in 1999, becoming a Democrat in 2001, returning to the Republican Party in 2009, switching to independent again in 2011, and finally rejoining the Republican Party in 2012.  That’s five political party switches in 25 years. No other president comes close.

President Trump is also unrivaled in his appreciation for glitz and extravagance. This is evident in reports of the demolition of the East Wing to construct a $300 million, 90,000 square foot ballroom, the gold-adorned Oval Office, and the renovation of the Presidential Walk of Fame. His penchant for lavishness is unmatched among past presidents.

Additionally, President Trump's skill of using derogatory language to describe others is well documented and unparalleled. The most recent example being his attack on Marjorie Taylor Greene, referring to her as "Marjorie Traitor Greene," "Lunatic," and "Wacky."

He would compete favorably in a name calling contest with a petulant and surprisingly creative fourth grader.

It is important not to focus solely on President Trump’s shortcomings. Fairness dictates that we also recognize his exceptional abilities where they exist.
