Letter to the editor: No day is off limits for peaceful protests

Posted

I am writing in response to the letter to the editor from Leah Sisemore published in The Chronicle on July 8 titled “Protesting on sacred American holidays to make a political point is disrespectful.”

I do not agree with Leah Sisemore. I feel there is no day on our calendar that is off limits for protesting in public peacefully if you feel a need to bring your concerns to the attention of the public.

Your sacred days are not everyone’s sacred days.

I am an 80-year-old, decorated veteran of Vietnam. The Fourth of July is not a sacred day for me. It is an important day for me to remind our leaders that they swore an oath to abide by and protect our Constitution, and I expect them to live up to that oath.

Many people choose these days because they are not working and want to spend this time bringing their concerns to the attention of the public.

There are many people from all political parties protesting concerns for our country.

Read our Constitution. It is the foundation of our country and the guiding document of our nation.

At this time, we have a leader and a Congress that are ignoring their oath of office to uphold our Constitution and are serving the special interests of billionaires, international corporations and a president who believes rules do not apply to him.

That flag means nothing if it is not waving over our Constitution.
