Letter to the editor: Pick Ally Pickard for Port of Centralia commissioner

Posted

By now, you have probably become aware of the many “Pick Ally Pickard” signs all around town.

Ally Pickard is running for the position of Port of Centralia commissioner for District 2, currently held by her opponent, Julie Shaffley.

Shaffley has served in her position for two six-year terms, totaling 12 years, and is now seeking a third term. Beyond her pleasant personality, what accomplishments can Shaffley point to during this time?

She appears to merely approve whatever the port director proposes, with no discussions or input from the public. She has consistently voted to tax citizens while proclaiming the port’s financial status as “fantastic.”

I believe she has been involved with a fake Facebook page posing as the port, aimed at tarnishing reputations and silencing critics. She remained silent when the executive director called citizens “idiots” during a recent public meeting. I believe she allowed the executive director and a commissioner to make false accusations about citizens to cause harm. Additionally, Shaffley signed the executive director’s outrageous “golden parachute” contract, making it nearly impossible to terminate him without a hefty four-year payout.

Ally Pickard, a fresh face in the political scene, brings independent thinking and a commitment to serving the best interests of the citizens and community. She has taken the initiative to thoroughly understand our port — its purpose, policies, operations and the rules and laws governing Washington ports.

Ally will be ready to lead from day one.

Ally Pickard has over 15 years of experience in financial management, budgeting, grant administration and strategic planning. She currently serves as the grant and contract analyst for Community Integrated Health Services, where she ensures public funds are managed responsibly and aligns with community goals.

Once elected, Ally Pickard plans to prioritize transparency, reduce the port’s reliance on taxpayer funding, and promote collaboration with local stakeholders. She is committed to listening to and valuing the port’s citizen-owners.

The Port of Centralia needs change, and this is the chance for citizens to make a difference and reclaim our port — the port of the people.

Vote for Ally Pickard on Nov. 4 and be the voice for change.
