Letter to the editor: Remembering the good old days

Remember the phrase “the good old days?” Why, when they look back a number of years, do they recall them as “good old days?”

Well, I’m at that age and now I have the answer. Within the past 10 years, we suffered through a plague, our country is now trillions in debt, the political scene is utter chaos with taxes added onto taxes with a possible recession knocking on the door and the crime rate continually on the rise.

When I think back to the 40s and 50s, I remember when our mail was delivered to the house, milk was delivered to our house, even the ice man delivered ice to our house. And we didn’t have to lock up our house.

We children used to actually play outdoors, enjoying nature, not like today’s kids that don’t have time to get some fresh air for fear of missing something exciting on their smartphones and black box game machines.

In the 50s, our rivers, lakes and streams were teeming with “wild” salmon, steelhead and trout. Now the fish are farmed, fed “dog food” and antibiotics in pens, only to be released to us fishermen that are now used to a catch of five trout, all exactly 9.5 inches length, that have just been delivered by truck.

In the 50s, television and movies were clean, until Clark Gable said “damn.” Many people were horrified when they heard it. What is the content of our movies and television now? The junk we can shovel into our brains nowadays is not limited to adults. Our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can pull up the most vile stuff, even on their smartphones.

Yes, I do remember those “good old days.”

Is there any hope for a reprieve?

Maybe, all things are possible with God.
