Letter to the editor: Smells like violets to me

Let’s see how this goes.

We know that Republicans are loyal to the bone. We can solidly depend on their support even when the captain is on a sinking ship, dining on our pets and pondering which is better, getting eaten by a shark or being electrocuted.

In reality, there’s absolutely no reason to appeal to Republicans for their votes: It all comes under the brand. In fact, according to the grand leader, there’s no need to vote at all, since by election time, everything will be “fixed.” (More about that latter.)

Disregarding partisan squabbling, our country is actually in good shape. For instance: the war. I figure that, at a billion dollars a day, if we can keep that war going for 1,000 years, every American will be a millionaire. I mean that money’s got to go somewhere.

Let’s also take into consideration that this nation’s primary elections have reassured us that a strong belief in the power of the ballot still exists within the hearts and minds of a great number of Americans.

But, of course, it must be admitted that there is a tiny bit of concern that Democrats are dominating this theater of “mob rule,” while Republicans seem to have other interests (i.e.) golfing.

I guess the reason for this lack of participation is because the grand marshal of the parade has insisted that we all vow allegiance to his issued proclamation that elections are corrupt and will be stolen no matter how, when or where we vote. And he certainly ought to know a little about that: “I just want (you) to find 11,780 votes.”

No matter. The path to winning elections is not by presenting a program that can be proudly and enthusiastically adopted. Real power can only be obtained by allowing those that “own the country” to take it back and make “deals.” Forget about courting the public. Employ force against them instead. Threaten, belittle, intimidate, beat, gas, taze, prosecute, jail and deport anyone who gives you the side-eye. True believers are permitted to go even farther than that if necessary. Assistance in this great American experiment will be praised and pardoned.

But even after all of this, a feeble hope survives that our pathetic little ballot may still be rescued. A faint light promises daybreak.

In an appeal to Republican moderates and independents that “don’t like Trump,” Rep. Peter Abbarno on KELA’s “Let’s Talk About It” candidly instructed us in the niceties of Republican rule:

“Hold your nose and vote Republican or we will go down the tube.”

So all is not lost. We may not get what we want, but if you wade around in the muck long enough, you’ll become accustomed to the stench.
