Letter to the editor: The Christmas Possum — a poem

Posted

The chickens were nestled all snug in their nests

While dad kept a watch for those predator pests

Like weasels and possums, coyotes and cats

And even winged creatures like hoot owls and bats

When out in the pen there arose such a clatter

I sprang to the hen house to see what’s the matter

And what to my wondering eyes should appear

But a creature so horrible, my heart sunk from fear

With its red beady eyes and teeth long and white

I knew in an instant it could give a mean bite

So, I ran to the house to get a large bat

To club that mean creature and that would be that

But as I approached it, he looked rather sad

His composure had softened; I couldn’t stay mad

So, I opened the gate, and he knew what to do

He wagged his long tail as he bid me adieu

(Reality check: I clubbed it to death with my Louisville slugger!)
