Letter to the editor: Vote soon, vote yes on Centralia school levy

Should you vote yes on the Centralia School District levy?

I say “yes” for the following four reasons:

1. The world is full of false and misleading information. If we don’t provide our youth with a quality education that teaches them to think about and evaluate what they see or hear on the news, the internet or hear from their friends, we are doomed. People choose to think and act stupidly because it is too much trouble to verify the sources and content of what they hear. Children need to be taught how to think critically.

2. The generation that is in Centralia schools today are the future community leaders of Centralia and surrounding areas. They will be making decisions that affect this community for years into the future.

3. The students in school today are the future business managers and new small business founders that will provide employment opportunities in Centralia. They are the people who will be buying homes, and owner-occupied homes help stabilize communities.

4. If you are 55 or younger today, the students entering school this year are the future taxpayers that support the community infrastructure we all depend on. They also support the benefits you hope for when you reach retirement age. Better education equals better employment opportunities, better pay and more stable revenue to pay for services and benefits.

We need to provide safe, supportive, interesting and challenging educational opportunities for our youth. The enhanced opportunities provided by this levy are important for the development of our young people, our future.

Did you know that on average less than 5% of eligible voters will vote in this election? Your vote matters. Vote “yes” to support the Centralia School District levy.
